Nissan and Mazda said Friday that they are expanding their original equipment manufacturing (OEM) projects to include the Mazda Premacy, otherwise known as the Mazda5 MPV in markets such as North America and Europe. Under the agreement, Mazda will supply a "clearly differentiated version" of the Premacy to Nissan for sale in Japan, starting from May this year, the two companies said in a joint statement. Targeting better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions, Mazda has announced that the European market Mazda5 minivan is now available with a new 1.6-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine, which replaces the previous 2.0-liter unit. Read more »
Following the 2012 Mazda5's U.S. market premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Japanese maker released pricing details on its new minivan. The redesigned Mazda5 will go on sale at dealers across the U.S. in January 2011 with a starting manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $19,990, including destination and delivery.

Sharing the stand with the Shinari sports saloon concept at this month's Los Angeles Auto Show will be the North American version of the Mazda5 minivan. Shown for the first time to the public at the Geneva Salon this past March, the new Mazda5 gets a swoopier design with flared front fenders and a trio of three side creases starting from the front door and continuing all the way back to the tail lamps.

Mazda has announced that the refreshed Mazda2 will be given its European premiere at next month's Paris motor show. The Japanese firm also plans to introduce a new 1.6-liter turbo diesel for the Mazda5 MPV and Mazda3 sedan and hatchback models at the show.

Mazda's US division is recalling 215,000 units of its 2007-2009MY Mazda3 and Mazda5 cars manufactured from April 2, 2007 through November 30, 2008, because of a problem with the steering wheel system. More specifically, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said a defect in these vehicles could lead to a sudden loss of power assist which reduces the driver's ability to steer the car, especially at low speeds.

If you take into account that most domestic models are offered with the option of all-wheel drive in Japan, it was only a matter of time before Mazda released an AWD version of its latest Premacy minivan, otherwise known as the new Mazda5 in overseas markets.
